live in Australia and am a self employed music teacher. There is a friend going through hardship at the moment and would like to have music lessons but can not. If l give away music lessons for free can this come off my tax? l seem to remember in tax pack there is a section asking if you have given away anything for less than its value.

Hi. No, you can not. You might have just read something about valuing gifts of property given to deductible gift recipients, or maybe something to do with capital gains or adjustments on disposal of assets. But you can not deem a market value for gifts of services for tax deduction purposes. A gift of services does not come within the definition of a gift in the Tax Act.

No. If you had to report the value of the free services as income, then it would be deductible. Since the imputed income would equal the imputed expense, it would be a wash out, so you just omit it.

If you gave a charitable contribution of something you had purchased or had received as an inheritance or as a gift, then you could deduct it (in the USA) , but your own labor is not deductible.
