Hi,

l am an accounting student, with the goal of becoming an Accountant in the near future.

l have read many company annual reports, and on the description of the Finance Management, it normally states that they are a chartered accountant.

Now, does this mean that they have the ACA qualification? Or does the word 'chartered' in this case just mean they have any professional accounting qualification, for example, have the CIMA qualification.

My ambition is to become a Financial Director in the Future, l am just unsure which professional accounting qualification to work towards to achieve this.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

To be a Chartered Accountant you need to do ACA (Or ACCA) The CIMA qualification is purely Management Accounts ans does not mean you are an accountant.

A chartered accountant is a specific title. It is comparable to a certified public accountant in the US. l am an Certified Public Accountant & in order to receive my license, l had to have a certain amount of experience under the supervision of a CPA & had to pass a test covering, accounting theory, auditing, accounting practice & business law. To maintain my license, l have to complete 120 hours of continuing professional education every three years with no less than 20 in any one year.

The requirements for becoming a Chartered Accountant would probably be similar.

It means they are an ACA. That is the qualification that you should be working towards. Finish your degree and sign up for a training contract with the biggest accountancy firm you can find, preferably in London because there you will be working on better clients and have more opportunities.
