If u r a dependent, u may NOT claim EXEMPT status on Form W-4 if u have more than $850 in unearned income. That is in addition to the other requirements for claiming exemption from Federal income tax withholding, i.e. u had $0 tax liability the prior tax year & reasonably expect to have $0 tax liability in the current tax year.

If u r a dependent the most u can earn in 2008 & claim EXEMPT from FITW is $5,450 assuming that ur unearned income is less than $850. If u r not a dependent, it rises to $8,950 for a Single taxpayer under age 65. Other amounts apply to other filing statuses.

If you are a dependent and expect to make over $5450 for the year, you are not exempt.

Oh, right. And let is recap. 2 different IDs (Frenchsie & La Bebe) have asked identical questions (complete with identical $311 biweekly paychecks) saying their employer refused their ''exempt'' W-4.

Despite succinct on both sets of questions, the poster is back with another variation.

l truly believe the person is reading the W-4 instructions & making the questions up--no way the HR department told them on a Sunday that the earning income limit was $900.

PS, the poster has carefully privatized their questions/ so that it is harder to see their game.

You must pay at least the Social security and medicare tax, so there is no such thing as being exempt from tax unless you are an exempt orgainization such as a church or school
